 "Cute!" 2007-03-03
By Kate (South-western Pennsylvania)
I bought this for my daughter for Christmas, she was 8 months old and really liked it, her favorite being the little penguin that squeaks. She now (11 months) loves the big polar bear the most. We never had any issues with the pieces fitting in the carrier, it has always latched and stayed latched. Also our penguin sqeaks with very little effort. One of my favorite parts of this little set is that the growl of the larger polar bear is a series of different growls it makes, the fact that it's not an actual bear growling and more like a person cracks my daughter up. The only downfall I've seen at all is the painting of the penguin, and painted features of the other animals is that my daughter has all her front teeth and has just shredded the paint. She's had teeth since 4 months, I know some kids don't get them until later but seeing as this toy is recommended for 6-36 months or so and a majority of the children recieving this may or will shortly have teeth I think they should have tested it out a little better and gone with solid colored plastics instead of a quick paint job. All and all this is not a very expensive toy and I think well worth the money!

"Cute, but shy on details" 2007-01-26
By K. J. Hoffman (Chaska, MN USA)
We received this item as a gift for my one-year-old daughter, and thought it would be a real hit. She liked pressing on the polar bear's head to hear it roar. Her brothers [...] liked it too.

But once we got it home and really tested it out, some design flaws came to the fore.

1) The term "tote-along" is completely false. The doors of the tote close, but do not hold. The four pieces (roaring bear, squeaking penguin, clicking bear, and rattling block of fish-caught-in-ice) do not fit inside the plastic "cave." This means that every time I try to pick it up, hard plastic animals come crashing out of it and inevitably drop on my toes.

2) The mechanics of the smaller pieces are too tight. Even my older boys, who are very hard on toys, cannot whack the penguin hard enough to make it squeak. They can work the clicking head on the small bear, but the baby cannot, so she gets bored with it quickly.

3) This is more of a pet peeve, but the bear sound is not a real bear. It's a man saying "roar!" Admittedly, I think this bothers me more than the kids.

On the plus side, the faces on the animals are very cute, and the toy seems sturdy. The hinges on the tote doors contain metal pins and the handle is screwed in. If you appreciate the visual appeal, it might still be worth the money - but don't bank on easy transport.
